The Wingham Drop Spindle is the perfect introduction to spinning, at a price that won't break the bank.

We decided to create our own spindle many years ago, as the market seemed to be lacking a simple, affordable piece of kit aimed at those just starting out. Our spindle lets you have a go at spinning without having to invest hundreds on a spinning wheel. Of course the drop spinning is an art in itself, so if you find the bug takes you then we also stock Ashford and Kromski spindles, which offer a much wider range to choose from.

Small spindle 6.5cm diameter disc, shaft 8mm diameter, shaft length 19cm weight 25-35gms

Large spindle 8cm diameter disc, shaft 10mm diameter, shaft length 19cm weight 55 -65gms

The stems are manufactured from sustainable sources of grade A natural Birch, and the discs from certified sustainable European steamed beech (Fagus Sylvatica).

Small drop spindle

I am completely new to spinning and wasn't sure which spindle to purchase. I emailed Wingham Woolwork and Tom sent me a lovely reply, with guidance on which size to choose. He also explanned his preferences with regards to a top or bottom whorl spindle. All the information was helpful and I bought the small top whorl spindle.

I am really pleased with my purchase and managed to create a small amount of yarn on my first attempt. A bit thick and thin, but it's yarn.

So friendly and helpful.

Easy, light weight top whorl

I am new to spinning and prefer a drop spindle. This is my third. My others are bottom whorl, similarly light and interchangeable, heavier. The construction of this spindle seems reliably sturdy at a prefect price point for someone new. I've been able to achieve lovely thin, relatively consistent singles using this on my fifth try at spinning. I also don't feel I have to worry about travel mishaps with this spindle which is great.

Drop Spindle

Just getting started with my new spindle and I love it! It's great for beginners and even my daughter with Down's Syndrome is slowly getting some yarn spun on it. Great price for a great spindle!
