The Wingham Drum Carder is designed and built by us in South Yorkshire, allowing us to create a piece of equipment that has all the features we consider to be the most important. Within the design are the features that are not always visible but important. All the shafts rotate in bearings. The drums are easily adjustable to get the carding gap set. Robust stainless steel handle with an option for an extended length handle to make rotation easier.

Specifications

Constructed from European Beech finished with Danish oil, the Wingham Drum Card cloth is set at  72 points per inch (PPI),  the same grade as our Hand Carders. Coarser and finer grades are available, but the 72 PPI is a good balance for the vast majority of fibres that will be used.

The main drum measures 20cm (8") in width and has a diameter of 18cm (7"). This means that a final carded batt (sheet) will be approximately 62cm (25")long. A rolag for spinning would be 20cm long.

The carder frame is hand-made from certified sustainable European Beech, finished in Danish oil.

All rotating shafts are set in Oilite self lubricating sintered bronze bearings, ensuring not only that you get a smooth action on the carder but also that there is no wear leading to misalignment of the drums. These bearings are industrial standard designed to last a long time in high speed machinery so in the drum carder it will last a very long time.

The handle is made from heavy duty stainless steel with rotating wood grip. It's easily detached for storage and there's also the option of a longer handle to make turning easier.  The extended handle does reduce the turning effort but increases the arc of movement therefore, increasing  the amount of space required.

Included is the packer brush which locates on the frame at the back of the main drum, no clamping, it sits on the frame. In this position when blending it packs the fibres before they pass under the drum. This ensures any loose material placed on the top of the drum when blending is pressed into place before it has a chance to drop off.

Two speed drive, useful to use the slower drive when carding and faster when blending.

Amazing piece of kit

I've been looking at carding drums for a while, as I make and sell felted ( needle & wet felted ) 2D pictures. I wanted a machine that could help me blend larger amounts of wool ( I have tennis elbow at the moment ), I find it hard on my elbow, to do hand carding.Wow, this drum carder is fantastic. The blends look so natural. I love my sea batt , I have also done sky and grass as well as back grounds for my other pictures.I have used this drum carder for the last week, and I can honestly say, "I am over the moon."The machine itself is quality. When it arrived it only needed the handle attached, and I was ready to roll. Even a child could have set it up.I would definitely recommend this Carding drum, in fact I already have!!!

Wingham Standard Drum Carder

Having researched many drum carders and discussed them with end users it became apparent that the Wingham offering came out on top. So, I went ahead and purchased the Standard Drum Carder. I was very pleased that the item arrived very quickly and was packed exceptionally well. From the outset the carder performed well, both my partner and I are very pleased with the product and would highly recommend it to any potential purchaser.

Solid piece of kit

Quality build and easy to set up-Works perfectly- might be helpful to have a quill included to clean carding cloth but excellent product as typical of Wingham Woolwork

Great sturdy compact carder

Really well made and good value drum carder. Works perfectly and simple to use with all the tools needed to get started. The only suggestion I would make are longer clamp blocks as my table has rounded edges and the clamps feel like they want to slide off at times

Wingham Drum Carder

Dealt with this company on the recommendation of a friend who had also recently purchased a drum carder. Cannot fault the service, despite the fact the company were away when I decided I needed it today! I spoke directly to Tom and cannot fault the service I received. I waited only 1 week before one was available and it actually arrived in 48 hours.I have subsequently used it to reduce the large pile of fleeces I have to prepare and would recommend it to help speed this part of the process up. Thank you Wingham Wool

Drum carder

I am enjoying using my drum carder, it's well made, easy to use and just the right size. I have been processing washed fleece from my sheep and it produces lovely rolags which are perfect for spinning. There was a small problem with one of the accessories, but this was dealt with very quickly and efficiently - so 5 stars for both the carder and the customer service, thank you.

Beautiful Machine

A beautifully made drum carder using good quality wood and fittings. The finishing is lovely and smooth and all the parts work beautifully together. It shows that care and thought has been made into putting this piece of machinery together. It works beautifully to card up to 30g of fibre at a time - you can maybe push on a little more but you do feel it when turning the handle. This has carded all kinds of fibre including washed unprocessed fleece which was very crimpy to softer silkier fibres like merino. For the finer fibres I tend to bypass the liquorin and card it directly on to the main drum but the few times finer fibre has passed through the liquorin, I didn't get too much trouble with stuck fibre. My drum carder came with the 2 table clamps, a cleaning brush and an awl. It is surprisingly compact which is something I'm grateful for as space is limited - I store this under my computer table. Definitely a quality item and a highly recommend purchase.

Lovely

My Wingham Wool Drum Carder is even better than I thought it could be. Well made beautiful beechwood, I was able to start playing after a few minutes of opening the box. Just attached the handle.. smooth easy motion no effort to turn. A birthday gift from my husband. I felt like a child again just opening the box. The Drum Carder is such a joy to use. I am having so much fun mixing fibers, colours trying out ideas. Thank you so much I really appreciate the quality of my purchase. The staff have been great with advice and so friendly. I ordered more wool I am going to need it !

Excellent drumcarder

This drum carder is sturdily built and turns smoothly. Deals easily with the exceptionally curly BFL fleece I recently acquired (after a bit of flicking and picking). Very pleased with it. Also very pleased with the packaging, a lot of very nice randomly coloured wool which should felt very nicely, and a couple of copies of Wheel magazine... thank you very much!

Beautifully made and thoughtfully delivered

Having tried a friend's Wingham Drum Carder and dreaming of going from fleece to hand-knitted garments I took the plunge on this lovely item. So far I am thrilled with the craftsmanship and quality of the carder. It was delivered carefully in both recycled items and some gorgeous blended fibre too. I am very grateful to have this in my craft space and will be using it for years to come. Would recommend
