Custom carding service by Wingham Wool

A blend of your own.

Create your own wool blend with our custom carding service. Choose your fibres and proportions, and we’ll card them together into a JUMBO batt measuring approximately 6ft × 2ft, ready for your next spinning or felting project.

Your blend is carded in our Gloucestershire mill on a carding engine dating from the 1920s. Rescued from a closing mill in Huddersfield in the 1990s, it has been used and cared for by our team ever since. Every order supports the continued care and upkeep of this heritage machinery, keeping traditional wool carding alive.

Before you blend — useful information
How will my blend be prepared?

After passing through our carding engine, your blend is rolled onto a large drum, where the layers build up. It is then removed from the drum and rolled into a JUMBO batt, measuring approximately 6ft × 2ft. The thickness varies with the fibres used, as different wools give a different loft to the blend.

To see examples made in the same way, take a look at our JUMBO Batts range.

How long will my blend take?

We aim to process custom carded blends within 7 working days. Where production schedules allow, we fit them between our normal runs. Once made, your blend will be packed and shipped by Royal Mail or Parcelforce, depending on its dimensions, using a Tracked 48 service.

What machinery do you use?

Our carding engine was reclaimed from a Huddersfield textile mill that was closing in the early 1990s. Dating from the 1920s, it originally ran from a ceiling-mounted belt and pulley system and has since been adapted to run on an electric motor.

It was part of our South Yorkshire mill, and when we relocated to Gloucestershire in 2024, we brought it with us. Specialist movers were needed because the cast-iron framework can break if twisted or bent.

I can’t find a particular fibre to add to my blend

Some fibres we stock are not suited to our carding engine. This can be the case with very fine fibres, including certain cashmeres and silks, as the machinery is calibrated for wools such as Merino and natural breeds.

If you would like to use a fibre that is not listed, please give us a call to discuss the options. Our team have handled many interesting requests over the years and, where possible, are always keen to give things a go.
