Wingham Wool and the Crook Mark
At Wingham Wool Work, British wool has long been part of our story. We have a history of buying wool through Britain’s wool centres, including Bradford and the wider West Yorkshire wool trade. Those connections matter to us, bringing together the wool we sell and the people who grow, grade and prepare it.
We stock wools from around the world, each with its own qualities and uses. Alongside that variety, we believe British wool deserves a prominent place on our shelves. Buying and stocking it is one way we can support British sheep farmers and help sustain the industry around them.
What does the Crook Mark mean?
The Shepherds’ Crook is British Wool’s recognised mark for British-grown wool. Introduced in 1972, it helps customers identify the origin of the wool they are buying.
There are different versions of the mark for 100% British wool, blends containing British wool, traceable wool and regional wool. You can read more about the mark and its history on British Wool’s Shepherds’ Crook page.
Why it matters to the industry
British wool connects farms with a wider network of people and skills, from collecting and grading fleeces to processing fibre and making finished goods.
Keeping British wool in use helps maintain demand for the fibre farmers produce. For us, stocking it is a practical commitment to that supply chain and to the knowledge, livelihoods and wool-working traditions behind it.
What it means for you
The Crook Mark gives you a clearer way to recognise British wool when choosing materials for your next project. It helps you make an informed choice about provenance, alongside the breed, texture, colour and fibre composition listed on the product page.
Choosing British wool is also a way to support its continued use. Whether you spin, felt, weave or explore another wool craft, your choice helps keep this versatile fibre part of everyday making.
Our continuing commitment
Our range will continue to include both British and international wools. We value the choice that gives our customers, while remaining committed to sourcing and stocking British wool too.
Look for the Crook Mark on qualifying products across our shop—a small symbol connecting your next project with British wool and the people behind it.
